About Me

I graduated from the University of Toronto with an Honours Degree in Political Science and Economics. I then completed a Masters Degree at the Institute of Canadian Studies at Carleton University in Ottawa. My particular interests were the Canadian Constitution and Federal Provincial Relations. I completed my JD at the University of Toronto Law School. After articling in Toronto, I went into private practice in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, where I grew up. My practice was mostly on the civil side, including a large family law practice. However, for eight years I was a federal drug prosecutor, where I learned the law of the Charter in its formative years. In 1992 ,I was appointed to the Superior Court of Ontario, sitting primarily in Sault Ste. Marie, but also circuiting in the North East Region of Ontario, and sitting often in other centres, including Toronto, Ottawa, Oshawa, Brampton and New Market. As a generalist, I worked in all areas of the law, including criminal and civil jury work. A large part of my work was in Family Law as there was no Family Division in the North. I also sat regularly and for many years in Divisional Court and served a few times on the Ontario Court of Appeal. In December 2012, I was assigned by my Court to work with the Specific Claims Tribunal, which resolves historic First Nations land claims. From then until my retirement on April 1, 2019, I dealt with histoic land claims all over Canada, but primarily in Western Canada. During my years on the bench, I have participated in hundreds of settlement conferences in all areas of the law. I am prepared to mediate or arbitrate (including med-arb) in all areas of the law, but particularly in family law and Indigenous law. I intend to work primarily in Sault Ste. Marie, but am prepared to go to other centres. A more detailed resume is available on request.
