Blue Ridge Conservancy is a nonprofit organization that partners with landowners and local communities to permanently protect natural resources with agricultural, cultural, recreational, ecological, and scenic value in northwest North Carolina. 


The Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation connects people and communities with the Blue Ridge Parkway to support conservation, education, recreation, historic preservation, and economic development.

BRPFC is the Smart Starts agency serving Mitchell, Yancey, and Avery counties. Our mission is to enhance the lives of young children and support their families to ensure a strong foundation for learning. We fund and provide services for children through age 5, with the vision that our community works together to support children's success, to reach their full potential.  


The Blue Ridge RC&D is a 501-(c)3 non-profit organization that works with local communities to improve the quality of life and standard of living in our seven county area


The Buladean Foundation is dedicated to improving our community.  We hold fundraisers and educational activities throughout the year.


Dogwood Health Trust is a North Carolina non-profit corporation with the sole purpose of dramatically improving the health and well-being of all people and communities of Western North Carolina. Dogwood Health Trust was created from the net proceeds of the sale of Mission Hospital and focuses on innovative ways to address the many factors that contribute to overall health and wellness.

Each October, we will be hosting a long weekend of events highlighting the history and culture of our mountain community.  Some of these events are scary. Some are educational.  All these are fun, safe, and engaging with opportunities for the entire family.  We are especially fortunate to create this experience with a broad range of community partners from across Mitchell County.

Mitchell County Animal Rescue Inc. is a non-profit humane society formed in 1984. We operate the county animal shelter, have adoption, humane education and low-cost spay/neuter programs.


     SEARCH (Sustaining Essential and Rural Community Healthcare) aims to foster and defend the health and healthcare needs of the citizens of Mitchell and Yancey counties. SEARCH is open to everyone who cares about having robust local healthcare and wants to be informed about health issues. We share, educate, and advocate for rural community health.


The Community Foundation of Western North Carolina works with families, businesses, and nonprofits to strengthen communities through the creation of charitable funds and strategic grant making.
