Dr. George Fantus is an internationally recognized clinician, scientist and academic leader in the field of Endocrinology and Metabolism. His research into how the hormone insulin acts on tissues to lower blood sugar has provided new insights into what goes awry in people with diabetes. His research has also identified new metabolic pathways by which high sugar levels lead to the complications associated with diabetes, such as kidney failure. This research has been recognized by numerous national and international lectureships, the Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA) Young Scientist Award and appointments to national and international grant review panels and Editorial Boards. Dr. Fantus has provided national leadership as Chair of the Clinical and Scientific Section of the CDA, as well as Director of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism and Associate Dean, Research in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto. Throughout his career, Dr. Fantus has been dedicated to education and mentorship along with providing compassionate patient care.
