Dr. Chengshan Xiao has made outstanding contributions to the fields of wireless communications and signal processing. His patented mobile speed estimation algorithm and robust channel equalization algorithm have been implemented into Nortel's base station radio products which saw massive production levels at the time. His wireless fading channel models and simulators have been widely adopted by academia and industry. He pioneered innovative designs of linear precoders for transceivers with finite alphabet signaling. His novel multiple input multiple output turbo equalization algorithms have been successfully applied to underwater acoustic communications with realworld undersea experiments conducted by the US Navy, for which he was honoured with a 2014 Humboldt Research Award.
