About Us

Get to know the Chemung River Friends

The Chemung River flows 45 miles through three counties and the state of New York and Pennsylvania. Most of it winds through Chemung County.

The Friends of the Chemung River Watershed (River Friends) is a nonprofit organization working to protect and promote the river and its major tributaries – the Canisteo, Cohocton and Tioga rivers. The water from those waterways flows more than 300 miles to the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland.

River Friends, headquartered in Elmira, helps build and maintain boat launches and river trails. We lead guided eco-recreation events from river paddles, to hikes, mountain biking and cross-country skiing along the rivers.

We present environmental education and river history classes. We partner with municipalities to weave our rivers into the region’s development, and to improve our environment, quality of life and economy.

River Friends helps protect the many plants, animals and fish that call our rivers home, including the bald eagle, beaver and fox.

River Friends depends on memberships and support from people like you. To make a donation and for more information, including river maps and places to rent canoes or kayaks, visit the Friends of the Chemung River Watershed website at www.chemungriverfriends.org
