About Us

The Potter’s Studio was first conceived in 1971 by a group of 12 people.  With support from the local potters’ community and the Clay and Glass Association (now called Fusion), the studio was born.

Space was rented at 328 Dupont Street and the studio was up and running by April,1972. In June, 1977, the sale of the building on Dupont Street necessitated the move to 2 Thorncliffe Park, Unit 16.

By 2002, we were able to accommodate 50 potters.  In the fall of 2020, we moved a few doors down to the beautifully renovated space at Unit 19. This was the year we launched our online shop.

In 2022, we received notice that we had to move again to accommodate the Metrolinx Maintenance yards. We landed in our bigger and brighter studio at 1550 Birchmount Rd, Unit 116 in May, 2023.

We offer full and associate memberships, adult classes, and workshops. Full members have 7/24 access to the studio (except when sales and classes are running).

We operate in a coop model. Full members are required to be on one or more committees e.g. Glaze, Kiln, Housekeeping, Exec, Materials (clay), Sales, Marketing, Membership, Education, Health and Safety, .

We have 4 kilns which are fired by the Kiln Committee several times a week (depending on load). Members may also book a kiln to do their own firings (based on availability).

All clay must be purchazed through the studio. The clay cost covers glazes and firings. We have about 50 glazes and stains at any given time which are maintained by the Glaze Committee.

We have 5 clay tables, 2 glaze tables, 2 wedging tables, 12 wheels (Brent and Pacifica), a slab roller, an extruder, 2 damp cupboards (throw and handbuild), and a spray booth.

We run 2 in-person sales per year (conditions permitting) and have an online shop.

We engage with our local community and support Feed Scarborough, Empty Bowls and Scarborough Arts.

We are not a production shop.
