Three weeks prior to Barbara Rubel giving birth to triplets, her father, a retired NYC Police Officer, died by suicide. Her mother was one of the first New York City female officers, and their story was featured in the Emmy award winning documentary, Fatal Mistakes: Families Shattered by Suicide, narrated by Mariette Hartley. Barbara is a champion for professional well-being in victim services, and has pioneered a unique approach to addressing traumatic grief informed care and vicarious trauma by bringing a deep understanding of thanatology and personal resilience to her work.
