About Us

UNESCO Global Geoparks are certified regions of outstanding geological and cultural heritage and in 2023 we will become the next certified Global Geopark in Canada. We celebrate and educate about Niagara's geology of international significance, which includes Niagara Falls, Niagara Gorge, the Niagara Whirlpool, the Niagara Escarpment, and our ancient Queenston Shale. We work together with academic and community partners across the Region to tell the story of how these imporant landforms have impacted our culture.

Our goal is to foster and grow a strong collective pride in our geoheritage, in all its diverse Indigenous, cultural, historical, environmental, educational, industrial and agricultural manifestations. The Geopark is made up of 20 Geosites, with at least one found in each of Niagara's 12 municipalities. We take our cues from what Indigenous peoples have been doing in Niagara for thousands of years; meeting, trading, sharing stories, harvesting food and establishing strong family and cultural ties.

We support local tourism through our Geopark Operators Network, our online directory that helps people find and support local business during their visit to the Geopark. The directory is free to join until we gain certification, we only ask that our members adhere to our Sustainability Pledge that is based on the UNESCO Sustainability Goals. We actively promote the work of our members on our website and social media channels and work with them to create Geopark themed tourism products and experiences.
