About Me


Toni Lewkowicz is Professor Emeritus in theDepartment of Geography, Environment and Geomatics at the University of Ottawa. He works on discontinuous permafrost characteristics and distribution in the Yukon, northern BC, western NWT and Labrador, using climate monitoring, electrical geophysics and spatial modelling. He is also interested in thermokarst processes on slopes which lead to the formation of active-layer detachments and retrogressive thaw slumps. He obtained his B.Sc. in Geography from the University of Southampton (UK), and his MA and PhD in the same discipline from the University of Ottawa. He worked for an engineering consulting company at the start of his career, then switched to academia. He was a professor at the University of Toronto for 12 years before moving back to Ottawa in 1994. He edited the journal Permafrost and Periglacial Processes (2006-2012), was President of the International Permafrost Association (2012-2016) and was Dean of the Faculty of Arts (2009-2015). He is currently Chair of the IPA’s International Advisory Committee and was the first President of theCanadian Permafrost Association.
