Royal City Science is a grass-roots organization formed in 2020 when a group of scientists and science enthusiasts in Guelph began exploring a bold dream of building a science playground for the community. Our goal is to build a world-class science centre in Guelph, with the UN’s 17 Goals for Sustainable Development as our guiding principles. As we work towards our vision, our team is also exploring online means of engaging our community in science learning, while mindful of the public health restrictions currently in place during this pandemic.
The major issues facing humanity today are inherently scientific or technological. Now, more than ever, it’s crucial that Canadians understand and embrace science. Climate change, viral pandemics, food insecurity/inequities, access to clean drinking water… these challenges faced by our species require creative and innovative solutions. With science/technology/engineering/math (STEM) education and training, Canadians can contribute to those solutions. And, a better understanding of science empowers people to make responsible decisions as parents, consumers, community members, and voters.
The time has come for a permanent facility in our community in which families, youth and school groups can spend a day immersed in a scientific playground without having to travel to other regions of the province. By establishing a brick-and-mortar science centre in Guelph, we will build on existing STEM outreach initiatives in the community to create a haven for critical thinking, scientific literacy, and accessibility for all peoples within our community.
