About Me

I started my career in England for the London Electricity Board before travelling in Europe. On my return, I worked for Canware Ltd., a lock and door manufacturing company, with the responsibility to solve function issues with the lock mechanisms, and then to Savage Sloan, an industrial design firm.

In 1969, Ibegan working for Atlantic Packaging Company Ltd., where I initiated the Packaging Design Centre. In this role I integrated graphics and package design, corporate image programs for such companies as Knob Hill Farms and Highland Farms. For employee health and safety, I recommended the painting of the manufacturing facility ceilings white to reduce shadowing resulting in increased safety around equipment and machinery.

Next, I joined Coles Book Stores Ltd., as a Product Development Manager in 1979, my role was to develop and design new stationery products. As well, I managed the sign print shop and designed signage for 150 stores. As my role grew in the non-book product area. Coles identified the school, home and office market as emerging business opportunities. I redesigned and created new stationery office products to meet those needs.

In a pivotal year of my career, I joined EKCO Housewares, as Product Manager and Designer where I managed and designed brush products for their Brushware Division.

I returned to Coles Book Stores as a Merchandising Designer and worked with various departments to create unique product displays and helped integrate new sectional fixtures into all the Canadian stores.  I left in 1995 after the company merged with Smith Books to form Chapters, to start The Design Department Inc., which focused on packaging and graphic design over a 5 year period.

In 2000, I joined HBC/Zellers as a Senior Package Designer, Brand Consumer Packaging and developed and designed new Zellers private brand packaging for consumer electronic lines, Ascent, Hype, stationery, Paper Plus, Gloria Girl, liaised with offshore suppliers and in-house teams to deliver private label projects.  I was also involved in implementing new customer service ideas that involved Head Office employees working in the stores at the peak seasonal times and oversaw and maintained brand image and packaging for over 500 packages annually. With my assigned brands, I coordinated all phases of production and off-shore communication.

In 2006, I began working at Telegraph Road as Designer and Creative Director, developing and designing book products for children and adults in the leisure, educational, and activity market. I created Canadianized colouring books under the Disney brand, Kids Activity books under Crayola brand, and Math, Phonics and  Early Learning Skills in Max & Ruby and The Backyardigans under the Treehouse brand. Along with all the educational workbooks, I designed Deluxe Learning Kits, mock-ups, renderings, and displays. I streamlined production with the aid of a  software developer, designing and producing Sudoku books – we have sold over 7 million books. This position gave me the opportunity to tie all of my education, skills, abilities, and vast experiences into a most satisfying and productive position.

In my next 50 years, I plan to continue utilizing the creative process.
