About Me


Aubie Angel MD, BSc(Med), MSc (Exp Med), FRCPC, FCAHS: Professor Emeritus: President, Friends of Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Senior Fellow, Massey College (Member of Corporation), University of Toronto.

Dr. Angel is an Endocrinologist with research interests in adipose tissue and lipid/lipoprotein metabolism. His earlier research concerned fat formation and storage in adipose tissue and discovered that in obesity, total body cholesterol is enlarged because of the accumulation of cholesterol in fat tissue. He also found that fish oil diets resulted in smaller fat stores compared to animals fed saturated fat, such as lard. Dr. Angel has published many papers, and books related to nutritional and hormonal control of adipose tissue metabolism.

Dr. Angel’s administrative activities have been extensive and include a term as Prof and Head, Dept of Internal Medicine, University of Manitoba and Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg. He also served as Director of the Institute of Medical Science and Director of the Clinical Sciences Division at the University of Toronto. In 2000, he established Friends of CIHR, a national organization that promotes the goals and ideals of CIHR and under its auspices founded the Friesen International Prize in Health Research [www.fcihr.ca and Twitter: @friendsofcihr].
