About Me


Ron Worton retired in 2007 from the position of CEO and Scientific Director of the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute, Vice President of Research at the Ottawa Hospital and Professor at the University of Ottawa. He previously served as Geneticist-in-Chief at the Hospital for Sick Children and as the inaugural Scientific Director of the Stem Cell Network. Dr. Worton has served on the boards of many organizations, including the Canadian College of Medical Geneticists, the International Human Genome Organization, Genome Canada, Research Canada (two years as Chair) and the American Society of Human Genetics (President in 2000). His work, primarily on the genetic cause of muscular dystrophy, has resulted in many publications in leading journals, review articles and book chapters. Among many honors, Dr. Worton was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He is an Officer of the Order of Canada, recipient of a Gairdner International Award and a Laureate of the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame. He currently resides in Oakville with his wife Helen, and enjoys proximity to family including two young grandchildren.
