Robert Hegele of the University of Western Ontario is one of Canada’s leading clinician scientists studying the genetic basis of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. He is internationally recognized for identifying the causative genes for 10 diseases, including pioneering work in patients with inherited diabetes. His approach of studying rare subtypes of common diseases has revolutionized our understanding of the molecular basis of insulin resistance. These discoveries have been implemented worldwide as routine diagnostic tests that have improved patient care and outcomes. Author of over 350 scientific articles, he has received numerous national and international scientific awards and distinctions.
