Arthur Slutsky is an engineer, physician and researcher who discovered the concept of biotrauma, demonstrating that mechanical ventilation leads to both biophysical injury and the release of mediators that can lead to development of Multi-Organ Dysfunction Syndrome. As a result, the management of critically ill patients has changed. He has published over 300 peer-reviewed articles and in 2004, was the second most cited critical care medicine investigator in the world. Dr. Slutsky chairs numerous national and international respiratory and critical care societies, and is on many journal editorial boards and Data Safety Monitoring Boards.
