Artist Statement:

Faith Layard: I am an active Enamellist/Jeweller/Metalsmith, and part-time Professor in the Jewellery Studies Program at George Brown College in Toronto.

“Enamel offers unlimited means to express form, movement, line, and colour, together with brilliance and depth.

My enamelling begins with an observation or impression. The interplay of enamel and metal guides my creative processForm takes shape with sawing, surfacing, and forming, a copper or fine silver base. Movement and detail are developed through sifting, sgraffito, stencil, wet inlay, foil inclusions, cloisonne wire and piercing. Colour builds right from the base metal and transitions through multiple applications and firings of opaque, transparent, and opalescent enamel. Hand finishing enhances the visual and tactile qualities.

Allowing the materials to respond and converse through these many processes creates challenge, surprise, and inspiration! Through jewellery, vessel forms and wall pieces, I strive to celebrate and share a moment of beauty, contrast, evolution, and existence.
