Martin-Matthews, Anne

About Me


Anne Martin-Matthews is  a Professor of Sociology at the University of British Columbia.  From 2019-2022 she served as the inaugural Associate Vice-President Health at UBC. From 2017-2018, she was seconded from UBC to serve as the Acting Vice-President, Research, Knowledge Translation and Ethics at the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). As Scientific Director of the CIHR Institute of Aging (2004-2011), she was a strategic champion in the establishment of the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA), and launched the Institute's signature mentoring program, its Summer Program in Aging (SPA) in 2006. In 2012, CIHR recognized her “commitment to the mentoring of the next generation of researchers on aging” with the creation of the Anne Martin-Matthews Doctoral Research Prize of Excellence in Research on Aging. She holds mentoring awards from the Canadian Association on Gerontology, and from the UBC Killam Trust, and Honourary Degrees from Newcastle University (UK) and Memorial University. 

Over a 45 year career, she has been a leader in research on social gerontology, on issues of home and community care, social support, widowhood, and aging in rural communities.  She is a Fellow of the (U.S.) Gerontological Society of America. She currently serves on the Board of the NCE AGEWELL, the Board of the Health Data Research Network (Canada), on the President's Research Council of CIFAR: Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, and on the Steering Committee for the Rick Hansen Foundation. In 2018, she was inducted as an Officer of the Order of Canada.
