Sound the Alarm: Music/Theatre is thrilled to be working with playwright Anosh Irani in the opera adaptation of his award-winning play Bombay Black.
The lives of an Indian exotic dancer and her embittered mother are altered when a blind stranger visits them.
Poetic, mythic and brave, Indo-Canadian Anosh Irani’s multiple Dora Award-winning and Canadian Governor General nominated play Bombay Black is a searing play set in the bitter reality of India. Funny, violent, humane, it is a powerful story of vengeance, betrayal, and seduction. Irani has a wonderful theatrical sensibility and gift for bringing together magical fables and the gritty reality of Indian street life.
The play is the story of Apsara, who lives in Bombay with her mother, making a living by selling erotic dances to wealthy men. When a blind man named Kamal arrives for an appointment, the complex and brutal past of the three characters slowly rises to the surface.
Bombay Black is rooted in remarkable poetic text and bold theatrical imagery, resulting in a compelling work by one of Canada's leading playwriting voices.
BOMBAY BLACK explores the relationship of ritual, family bonds, hope, and redemption, through the lens of Indian mythology and modern-day reality. Living through sexual trauma, abuse, and loss of sight, the three characters are each driven by incidents that both haunt and inspire them.
Subtitled 'A Seductive Romance’, BOMBAY premiered at Toronto's Theatre Centre in 2006 by Nightswimming Theatre Company, and has since been produced by companies throughout Canada and India - with a Hindi version making its New Delhi and Mumbai premieres to critical acclaim. It was shortlisted for the Governor General's Award, received four Dora Mavor Moore Awards, including Outstanding New Play, and was a Finalist for the Governor General’s Literary Award for Drama.
THE ALARM: This work helps ‘sound an alarm’ on gender power imbalances, pointing out how abusive patriarchs can perpetuate hurt and anger beyond their abuse. A prominent problem even in Canada, gender-based violence is brought to stronger light in a story that depicts fraught familial relationships bonded and escaped through revenge, salvation, and self-actualized hope. After the play's triumphant premiere in India, a critic from New Delhi’s ‘Pioneer’ wrote “BOMBAY BLACK has taken the gender war to where it should belong…femininity here is a hissing snake with unadulterated anger, writhing and waiting to pounce upon the sinning male for revenge. Bombay Black is a searing play.
