Mezzo-soprano Taryn Plater is a versatile performer and creator with a strong investment in the future of opera and arts outreach. She was a 2021-2022 RBC Artist Fellow with the Association for Opera in Canada and continues to be active both on and off stage. Taryn created the digital artist statement First Steps through Against the Grain's 2021 National Opera Intensive, exploring her cultural heritage through Ukrainian art song and dance. She took part in the 2022 Ukrainian Art Song Summer Institute and was a recipient of the Hnatyshyn Foundation's Ukraine – Heritage, Sprit, and Future award.
Taryn was recognized for her “dramatic and vocal thrust” (Opera Canada) while portraying the title character in the Canadian premiere of Pasazerka. She has performed with Opera NUOVA and the Hawaii Performing Arts Festival, and has featured in concerts in Germany and the Czech Republic. At home, she enjoys varied performance opportunities that range from accessible opera concerts in public spaces to jazz piano and vocal engagements. Taryn is grateful to be the recipient of a 2021 Vancouver Opera Foundation bursary and a 2019 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions (Western Canada District) Encouragement Award.
In addition to her performance endeavours, Taryn is a mentor with Opera InReach and the founding Artistic Director of the young Vancouver-based company Opera Unbound. She earned her opera performance degree at the University of British Columbia studying with Krisztina Szabó and Marisa Gaetanne while simultaneously completing degrees in business management and linguistics.

Pamyatayesh (remember) is a multimedia project exploring cultural memory and Ukrainian-Canadian experiences in a hybrid performance involving film and live Ukrainian art song. What happens when your culture is torn from its place, and what becomes of intangible cultural connection when memory itself begins to fade?
In 1999, my Ukrainian family celebrated the centennial anniversary of their emigration from Ukraine to Canada. The speech my baba gave on this occasion will form the project's narrative frame, and the film will represent her memories of her Ukrainian-Canadian culture through physical artifacts, photos, and dramatization. As dementia began to take these memories, I often wondered whether she felt she had successfully passed on her culture to her children and grandchildren.
Over time, memory fails, but by passing down what she could to me, my baba ensured that her culture and story would remain alive. While performing Ukrainian art song as the film plays behind me, I become the next chapter of my Baba's story, receiving her cultural offerings and, in turn, sharing this inherited culture with my own voice.
That my Baba could pass elements of this culture to me before dementia caused her to forget offers a sense of peace and a promising outlook for the future. It is also a reflection on the often intangible connection to heritage that I believe will resonate with audiences from a wide range of cultural backgrounds.
My intention is for this project to exist in two forms:
1. A live hybrid performance (as described above) where film is used to tell the past components of the story as a live performance extends the narrative into the present.
2. A fully digital offering where my present-day interaction with the culture (ie. my performance of Ukrainian art song) is woven into the film itself.

Pamyatayesh (remember) est un projet multimédia qui explore la mémoire culturelle et les expériences ukraino-canadiennes dans une performance hybride impliquant un film et une chanson d'art ukrainien en direct. Que se passe-t-il lorsque votre culture est arrachée à son lieu d'origine, et que devient le lien culturel intangible lorsque la mémoire elle-même commence à s'effacer ?
En 1999, ma famille ukrainienne a célébré le centenaire de son émigration de l'Ukraine vers le Canada. Le discours prononcé par ma baba à cette occasion constituera la trame narrative du projet, et le film représentera ses souvenirs de sa culture ukraino-canadienne par le biais d'artefacts physiques, de photos et de mises en scène. Lorsque la démence a commencé à emporter ces souvenirs, je me suis souvent demandé si elle avait l'impression d'avoir réussi à transmettre sa culture à ses enfants et petits-enfants.
Avec le temps, la mémoire fait défaut, mais en me transmettant ce qu'elle pouvait, ma baba a fait en sorte que sa culture et son histoire restent vivantes. En interprétant une chanson d'art ukrainien alors que le film passe derrière moi, je deviens le prochain chapitre de l'histoire de ma Baba, recevant ses offrandes culturelles et, à mon tour, partageant cette culture héritée avec ma propre voix.
Le fait que ma Baba ait pu me transmettre des éléments de cette culture avant que la démence ne la fasse oublier m'offre un sentiment de paix et une perspective prometteuse pour l'avenir. C'est aussi une réflexion sur le lien souvent intangible avec le patrimoine qui, je pense, trouvera un écho auprès d'un public issu d'un large éventail de milieux culturels.
Mon intention est que ce projet existe sous deux formes :
1. Une performance hybride en direct (telle que décrite ci-dessus) où le film est utilisé pour raconter les composantes passées de l'histoire tandis que la performance en direct prolonge la narration dans le présent.
2. Une offre entièrement numérique où mon interaction actuelle avec la culture (c'est-à-dire mon interprétation de la chanson d'art ukrainienne) est intégrée au film lui-même.
