Isaiah Bell performs across North America as a Classical tenor (notably Rufus Wainwright and Daniel MacIvor’s Hadrian at the Canadian Opera Company, The Barber of Seville for Vancouver Opera, Mark Morris’s production of Curlew River at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, and regular appearances with the Toronto Symphony, Philharmonia Baroque, the National Arts Centre Orchestra, and the Oratorio Society of New York) and complements that practice with composing and writing for the theatre. The Book of My Shames, a co-creation with director Sean Guist, combines these three disciplines in a deeply personal work of art.
Isaiah also translated and adapted Poulenc’s solo opera La voix humaine for a City Opera Vancouver filmed production (a “finely tuned performance, so perfectly married to his own sensitive and intelligent adaptation” — Opera Canada), and often designs and performs hybrid concept recitals that interweave his own music and poetry with works from the classical canon. Other performances this year includes two world premieres at Opéra de Montréal, Mendelssohn’s Elijah with the Oratorio Society of New York at Carnegie Hall, and with the Florida Orchestra, and Symphony Nova Scotia, and Lysander in A Midsummer Night’s Dream in Des Moines. He also returns to collaborations with Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, Bethlehem Bach, and conductor Nicholas McGegan, and appears with the Vancouver Symphony under Otto Tausk.

The Book of My Shames has been described as a “comic, wrenching, and personal tour-de-force”, "impossibly beautiful", and an "insightful and tender exploration of life’s awkward underbelly". It's an intimate opera/cabaret/queer storytelling hybrid that mixes open-hearted longing with sharp wit and occasionally shocking candor. Tenor, writer, and composer Isaiah Bell guides the audience through the permutations of a life defined by what it’s missing — or, as he calls it, ‘The Story of a Hole’. Careening from a restrictive fundamentalist cult on to obsessive passions for bad men and a successful but hollow life on the stage, the show gets up close with one of life’s achingly common questions: How can we find meaning in existence when the goals keep shifting?
The Book of My Shames is theatre work animated by a diverse array of original music — art songs and ballads, cleverly touching torch songs, and expansive operatic scenas. Isaiah Bell’s songwriting is modern but lyrical, blending his disarming conversational tone with a sophisticated classical- and cabaret-influenced musical aesthetic. Scored for piano, violin, cello, and percussion.
