WeiHsi Hu is a Canadian tenor who has completed his Bachelor of Music at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in vocal studies and Master of Music at the University of Alberta majoring in choral conducting. Most recently, he studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama under the tutelage of John Evans. While studying at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, WeiHsi coached with Liz Marcus, Richard Jackson, Andrew West, Eugene Asti, and Graham Johnson. He was selected as one of the featured soloists in Graham Johnson’s Schumann Songs Concert Series in 2010.

WeiHsi has performed and understudied roles and as chorus in opera productions both in Canada, UK and Europe. Opera companies he has worked with included the Birmingham Opera Company, Secret Opera, Welyn Garden City Opera, Artwork Opera, Kings Opera, Zezere Arts Festival, Guildhall Opera, Merry Opera, Music Theatre 2000, Southwick Opera, Jackdaws Young Artist Programme, AIMS International Music School, Vancouver Music in the Morning Society, UBC Opera and Opera Nuova.

His credits included Jimmy McIntyre in the Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny, Quint from Turn of the Screw, Don Ottavio from Don Giovanni, Ferando in Cosi Fan Tutte, Camille in the Merry Widow, Nathanial in Tales of Hoffman, and Sem in Noye’s Fludde. In public performances of opera scenes, WeiHsi has also sung the title role of La Clemenza di Tito, Albert Herring, Count Belfiore in La Finta Giardiniera, and Anatol in Vanessa in excerpt performances.

On the concert stage WeiHsi has sung with the Vancouver Handel Society of Music, Abbotsford Symphony, University of Alberta Symphony, and most recently in the UK with Voices of London Festival, St. John of Jerusalem Festival Chorus, and the London Mozart Players at the Cambridge Music Festival.

WeiHsi conducting career started as Assistant Conductor to Bruce Pullan at the Vancouver Bach Children’s Chorus and at the same time as Music Director of New Westminster United Church in 1999. Since then WeiHsi has worked extensively with children’s and youth voices, including ensembles such as the British Columbia Boys’ Choir.

WeiHsi studied conducting with Bruce Pullan and Leonard Ratzlaff at the University of British Columbia and University of Alberta. He also studied orchestral conducting with Kenneth Kiesler at the Medomak Conductors’ Retreat and with Colin Metters at the Royal Academy of Music Spring Conducting Masterclasses

WeiHsi's approach in choral conducting focuses on building singing skills while fostering group ensemble. WeiHsi currently works as choral clinicians and music director at workplace choirs such as The Place, Centre for Contemporary Dance and JLL Properties.
