About Us

The Spoonery was created in 2003 by artisan Matt Dondale, who had been carving since the age of 11. Matt had broken a few spoons in the family kitchen and after his wife Tanya teased him that she'd soon have to start baking with a stick, Matt immediately rose to the challenge of replacing them.  He went to the garage one afternoon and made his first spoon. The story was shared with friends and family as kind of an inside joke and after many people suggesting that he make and sell them, he did just that. Now 19 years later there are over sixty distinct kitchen utensils offered by The Spoonery and this is Matt's full-time job. Each individual piece is Handmade by Matt himself. He uses a combination of hand and electric tools to craft each unique item. All of The Spoonery spoons and charcuterie boards are made with Nova Scotia hardwood sourced from small independent sawmills. The only exception is for the BBQ scrapers and we use Canadian Red Cedar to make those . The lumber is air-dried for at least one year before being used to create these amazing kitchen tools. With a huge emphasis on comfort, design and functionality The Spoonery spoons are unique and have so much character. We are proud to say that our spoons are used in kitchens all over the world!
