About Me


Professor of Medicine (Cardiology) UBC. Early research on
modification and non-invasive measurement of myocardial infarct size, later
antithrombotic therapies for acute ischemic syndromes and atrial fibrillation,
and post-myocardial infarction arrhythmias. Over 200 peer-review publications,
co-edited textbook "Evidence-Based Cardiology" (3 editions). Practiced
cardiology in Ontario, focus on acute coronary care and invasive cardiology.
Has served on Editorial boards, grant committees of peer-review agencies and
executives of professional/scientific societies, chaired DSMBs of large
clinical trials. . He is a member of the CCS group which developed the 
Atrial Fibrillation Guidelines (201, 2012, 2014 and 2016), chairing the
chapters on stroke prevention. Lead  CIHR Clinical Research Initiative in
2004-05 (proposed a variety of programs to strengthen the support of Clinical
research in Canada,  co-chaired CANNeCTIN (a CIHR/CFI-funded CV clinical
trials network 2008-13) and was a member of CIHR's External Advisory Group on
Multi-site Clinical Studies (2012). Co-ordinator of Hamilton Regional
Cardiovascular Program (1979-88), Chair of Medicine, McMaster University
(1988-96). As Dean of Medicine, UBC (1996-2003), worked with UBC and BC
government to plan   a two-fold expansion of the Medical School in
conjunction with Universities of Victoria and Northern BC. Past-president 
CAHS.   Order of BC 2013.
