About Me


Paul McDonald is a Professor of Health Policy and Managment and the former Dean of the Faculty of Health (2016-2022)  at York University. He was previously the founding Pro Vice Chancellor of the College of Health (2013-2016) at Massey University in New Zealand and spent 15 years in various leadership roles in the University of Waterloo including Director of the School of Public Health and Health Systems as well as  Director of the Population Health Research Group. He has extensive managerial and governance experience in the public health and health care service sectors and has been a policy consultant to Ministries and agencies around the world. Paul has published 200 scientific papers and reports related to health promotion and the primary prevention of chronic illnesses. He has extensive expertise in the use of policies, programs, marketing, knowledge exchange and capacity building related to tobacco control. His more recent interests include the role of social networks and connection on health and the negative impacts of social media and cell phones on mental wellbeing. He holds a Ph.D. in population health as well as a master's degree in clinical psychology.
