About Me


Dr. Sultan Darvesh is a Professor of Medicine (Neurology/Geriatric Medicine) and Medical Neuroscience at Dalhousie University, Halifax, Canada. He is the DMRF Irene MacDonald Sobey Chair in Curative Approaches to Alzheimer's Disease in the Faculty of Medicine, Dalhousie University, Adjunct Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Physics, Mount Saint Vincent University, Halifax, Canada and Research Associate in the Department of Chemistry, University of New Brunswick, Fredericton, Canada. From 2012-2019, he was the  Assistant Dean, Research-Clinical Departments in the Faculty of Medicine, Dalhousie University. He is a co-founder and Director of the Maritime Brain Tissue Bank and is a scientific co-founder of Treventis Corporation, a biotech company focused on diagnosis and treatment of dementias. He graduated with a BSc, MSc (Organic Chemistry), PhD (Organic Chemistry) and Postdoctoral Fellowship (Molecular Biology) from the University of New Brunswick. He completed his MD and a residency in Neurology at Dalhousie University, and a Fellowship in Behavioural (Cognitive) Neurology at The Baycrest Center for Geriatric Care, University of Toronto, Toronto, Canada. Dr. Darvesh combines basic and clinical research and teaching duties related to neurodegenerative diseases. As a medicinal chemist and a behavioural neurologist his research focuses on neurochemistry and neurobiology of cholinesterases in the development of neurodegenerative disorders. He is concerned with developing diagnostics and therapeutics for Alzheimer's disease. This research is carried out in conjunction with assessment and management of patients with cognitive impairment.
