(BSc, University of Alberta, 1970; MSc, University of Toronto, 1972; PhD, Glasgow University, Scotland, 1975; postdoctoral fellow, McMaster University 1975-78). Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences, 2017. Dean has been on faculty in McMaster University (1978-1985), University of Calgary (1985-1992), and University of Alberta (1993-present). He has been a Sabbatical Scientist at the MRC Research Unit, The Gambia, West Africa (1983), Zymogenetics Inc. Seattle, WA (1991-92) and the Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute, Albuquerque, New Mexico (2004-2005). Dean is Professor Emeritus (2017), co-director of the Alberta Respiratory Centre (ARC) and a member of AllerGen NCE and the Canadian Infant Development Longitudinal Study. He served for 20 years on MRC/CIHR peer review panels and has been a member of Editorial Boards for eight international peer review journals, including 15 years for the Journal of Immunology and 7 years as an Associate Editor of Mucosal Immunology. He has published over 400 peer-reviewed and other scholarly articles. His research is on allergy, asthma and lung injury; novel therapeutics in inflammatory diseases; and neuro-endocrine control of inflammation. In 1996 he co-founded Salpep Biotechnology, now Aim Therapeutics Inc. The lead drug has anti-inflammatory activity and has undergone phase 1 and phase 2a clinical trials.
