WORKSHOPS, PRESENTATIONS AND SEMINAR TOPICS AND DESCRIPTIONS

PAIN MANAGEMENT
Across health care and society alike there are major gaps in knowledge about
pain. Educating health professionals about how to better understand pain and
its causes will help bridge these gaps.

PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY
Comprehensive lectures covering Crash Course, Basic Course, Advanced Course,
Primary Care Course, Medical Student Curriculum, Child and Adolescent
Psychoharmacology, Geriatric Psychopharmacology, Alcohol and Sunstance Abuse
Psychopharmacology.

MENTAL DISORDERS AND MENTAL HEALTH
Continued awareness is necessary in the United States and throughout the world
of the immense burden of disability associated with mental disorders. Mental
disorders collectively account for more than 15% of the overall burden of
diseases from all causes, slightly more than the burden associated with all
forms of cancer. There data underscore the importance and urgency of treating
and preventing mental disorders and promoting mental health.

NEUROLOGICAL DISORDERS, ESPECIALLY STROKE AND OTHER
CEREBROVASCULAR DISORDERS

The burden of neurological disorders keeps on growing by leaps and bounds each
year bringing forth serious consequences. Neurological disorders bring forth
enormous emotional and socioeconomic impact on patients, their families and
health services and the burden of conditions on patients, families, and society
is devastating. Stroke and other Cerebrovascular Diseases are the number 3
cause of death in the USA, the number 2 cause of death worldwide, and the
number 5 cause of death in low income countries.

CHRONIC DISORDERS
Chronic Disorders impose a significant burden on individuals, families,
communities, and health care system. Chronic Disorders such as asthma, chronic
lung disease, coronary heart disease, cardiovascular disease, heart failure,
diabetes, hypertensions, HIV, and chronic depression result in disabling
symptoms, loss of functional ability and productivity.

PSYCHOLOGICAL TRAUMA
The mental health effects of conflicts and other forms of extreme violence due
to human aggression can be chronic and socially and economically disabling.
Traumatic events take a serious emotional toll on those involved, even if the
event did not cause physical damage.

MEDICAL ILLNESS TRAUMA
Patients under stress of hospitalization and severe illness have to deal with
trauma due to medical illness in unique ways. Patients experience the stress of
medical illness, surgical illness and other life events that require
specialized biopsychosocial approaches.

NEUROTRAUMA
Neurotrauma has a severe human and economic impact. It affects individuals,
families, and also their communities, as a range of support and services are
needed to assist the person who sustains neurotrauma injury to live and to
participate in their community.

MIND-BODY INTERACTIONS IN HEALTH AND DISEASE
There are biological mediators between psychological and social factors and
health; psychological, social, and behavioral factors in chronic disease; and
psychological and social aspects of human development that influence disease
and illness.

PATIENT BEHAVIOR
Health risk behaviors, behavior change and impact of psychosocial stressors and
psychiatric disorders on manifestations of other illnesses and on health
behavior.

PHYSICIAN ROLE AND BEHAVIOR
Personal values, attitudes, and biases as they influence patient care, social
accountability, responsibility, and using linkage with community resources to
enhance patient care.

PHYSICIAN-PATIENT INTERACTIONS
Basic communication skills, complex communication skills, and context of
patient's social and economic situation, capacity for self care, and ability to
participate in shared decision making.

SOCIAL AND CULTURAL ISSUES IN HEALTH CARE
Impact of social inequalities in health care and the social factors that are
determinants of health outcomes. Cultural competencies.

PSYCHOLOGICAL FACTORS AND HEART DISEASE AND OTHER RISK
FACTORS TO PREVENT AND MANAGE CARDIOVASCULAR

The psychological input of heart disease and consequences of psychological
manifestation for prognosis carries emphasis on depression, anxiety, social
isolation, health status, and type D personality. A patient's psychological
profile not only plays a major role in the adaptation to the disease, but also
impacts on mortality, morbidity, and quality of life.

NEUROPSYCHIATRIC DISORDERS
Neuropsychiatry emphasizes the psychological features associated with
neurological conditions since well-recognized conditions have a large psychological
component. Neuropsychiatry brings forth tremendous benefits: comprehensive
neurological and psychological care or patients; reduced morbidity; fewer
unnecessary admissions and shorter stays; decreases psychological distress;
better quality of life for patients and carers; and improved patient, carer and
staff satisfaction.
