About Me

George Steiner, Professor Emeritus of Medicine at the University of Toronto and former Head of Endocrinology at the Toronto General Hospital, has been devoted for over four decades to advancing knowledge about atherosclerosis in those afflicted with the global epidemic of diabetes. His world leadership role in basic and clinical research and his training of others was recognized by the WHO, which made him Head of their Collaborating Centre for the Study of Atherosclerosis in Diabetes. His basic work using sophisticated tracer methods led to an understanding of the way in which blood fat disorders develop in diabetes. He then extended this to clinical studies, among which he direct the first multinational study (DAIS) that was specifically aimed at those with diabetes and showed that correcting blood fat disorders in them reduced the progression of coronary artery disease. Those working in his unit has gone on to academic positions in Canada and abroad. In addition to his other awards, 2007 the International Atherosclerosis Society recognized his outstanding role in research, education, and professional work in cardiovascular disease in diabetes by making him a Distinguished Fellow.
