Jacob H. Masliyah is University of Alberta Distinguished University Professor. He is former holder of the NSERC Industrial Chair in Oil Sands Engineering at University of Alberta  and is an excellent educator and researcher.  He has been a role model for many students and young academics.  His success illustrates the close linkage between fundamental and applied research, since most of his industrial contributions have had their origins in his fundamental work in transport phenomena. He is Officer of the Order of Canada and Fellow of Alberta Order of Excellence.
