About Me
Herbert Gaisano is Professor of Medicine and Physiology at the University of Toronto. He is an award winning and internationally recognized expert on the molecular basis of secretion, specifically exocytosis-the fusion of secretory granules with cell membrane. His work in exocytosis of insulin and digestive enzymes from the pancreas has uncovered mechanisms of distorted exocytosis to be a basis for diabetes and pancreatitis, towards which he is finding new ways of treating these diseases. His work has changed the prevailing views, impacting the whole field of biology since similar mechanisms regulate secretion in many cell types of all organisms.
