About Me


Laurence J. Kirmayer is a world leader in the field of cultural psychiatry, studying the impact of culture on mental health and illness as well as healing and recovery. He has made major research contributions to the areas of primary care psychiatry, Aboriginal mental health, immigrant and refugee health, and the anthropology of psychiatry. His research on Indigenous mental health has focused on risk and protective factors for suicide, cultural and community sources of resilience, and mental health promotion. He developed a widely influential model of cultural consultation in primary care to improve the quality of mental health services for immigrants and refugees.
