The Catherine Valley Trail currently offers 9 miles of multi-use trail (hiking, biking & cross country skiing), and when completed will span 12 miles and connect Watkins Glen State Park and Mark Twain State Park in the Southern Tier of New York State. Most of the trail is on portions of abandoned Northern Central Railroad and Chemung Canal towpath corridors in New York's Finger Lakes region. Hiking the Chemung River trails Hiking along the Chemung River is one of the best ways to enjoy the area’s scenery, nature and history. The river trails, levees and flatlands provide a variety of hiking opportunities on mostly flat and easy-to-walk terrain. You can hike along the river banks, through woods and meadows or high atop the grassy flood dikes offering panoramic views of the steep shale river cliffs. A Gorges Walk The glaciers were very kind to us, and we are constantly amazed by the natural beauty found in our gorges and waterfalls. We recommend two hikes: La Tourelle to Lower Buttermilk Falls - walk out the resort's front door and follow our Buck Trail into Upper Buttermilk Falls State Park. The trail will lead you through Upper Buttermilk and all the way down to Lower Buttermilk on the Gorge Trail. It takes a little over an hour and the hike is all downhill...and yes, we'll pick up our guests and bring them back to the resort if they don't want to do the uphill return hike. Robert H ...
