CONNECT 2022- FREE INTERACTIVE VIRTUAL SEMINARS FOR NZPSS MEMBERS – A SERIES OF DISCUSSIONSIn the fourth event of this series Kobus du Ploy will discuss the APA Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. The DSM-5-TR: Superfluous or long overdue? The latest version of the American Psychiatric Association's (APA) Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, Text Revised (DSM-5-TR) was officially released on 18 March 2022. It contains one new condition along with modifications to the criteria of approximately 70 others. Furthermore, it also includes changes to the terminology used for some conditions along with a review of how racism and discrimination might impact the diagnosis and manifestations of mental disorders. This has sparked debate among numerous scholars and practitioners, some of whom have questioned whether these changes were necessary, and others who have questioned why it has taken so long to be introduced? It has also raised questions around the relevance and continued use of the DSM in contemporary societies around the globe? This presentation hopes to open up a discussion about these same questions amongst psychologists in Aotearoa where the DSM continues to be used in various settings.
