This presentation will discuss the relationship among multilingual identity construction, immigration, and successful additional language acquisition. It will also discuss the benefits of multilingualism and the "multilingual turn" in research on additional language acquisition, language policy, and education. The presentation will focus on identity, good language learning, and adult immigrants in Canada. The target audience for this presentation consists of translators, interpreters, teachers of additional languages, and researchers.


With Andreea Cervatiuc, PhD, Associate Professor in the Department of Language and Literacy Education (LLED) of the Faculty of Education at UBC and Coordinator of the Online MEd in Teaching English as a Second Language. She is the recipient of the TESOL Award for Distinguished Research, the International Award for Outstanding TESOL Article, and a Teaching Excellence Award. Her scholarship focuses on multilingualism and multilingual education, additional language learning and teaching, language curriculum, socio-linguistic identity, language assessment, and online education.
