Faced with climate change and the need for low carbon solutions, mass timber is opening new design possiblities and popping up in the skylines of cities. There are more than 370 buildings in BC using mass timber, from public structures to commercial and multi-family residential applications. Where will this path lead us? We are delighted to have the mass timber professionals listed below joining us on Thursday, March 18th to help us better understand the emerging of mass timber.

Our Panelists include:
  • Steven Kuan, PhD, PEng, FEC, Associate Dean of Engineering and Geospatial Technologies at BCIT. Steven oversees the programs of Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Geomatics, Mineral Exploration and Mining Technology, Mining and Mineral Resource Engineering. He has over 25 years of experience in academia, government, consulting and research. He has been involved for many years in the field of design and construction of wood buildings, including mass timber construction.  He has managed programs, such as the provincial Wood First program, to support priorities of federal and provincial governments and meet the needs of industries. As a professional structural engineer, Steven has served on many different technical and professional committees, boards of directors and review panels, including volunteer services for Engineers and Geoscientists of BC and for Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council.  He graduated from The University of British Columbia with a B.A.Sc. and a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering. Steven is passionate about training and education.  This was demonstrated by his dedication in delivering continuing education courses, guiding graduate students, advising young professionals, and coaching youth baseball. Steven's passion drives him to never stop learning!

  • Orlagh McHugh, Bsc, MEng, Mass Timber Specialist, at Structurlam Mass Timber Corp. Orlagh is overseeing the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island. Before relocating to BC almost a decade ago, Orlagh earned her degree in structural engineering and architecture at University College Dublin, Ireland, and went on to complete a Master of Structural Engineering at the same institution. With over seven years of experience working with top Vancouver firms as a design engineer, she has contributed to a diverse catalogue of projects across a number of sectors, with a particular focus on wood and mass timber construction. Orlagh is inspired by the innovative nature of mass timber construction and keen to promote creativity, technology and sustainability in our built environment.

  • Patrick Crabbe, National Mass Timber Manager at Bird Construction. Not only did Patrick grow up between sawmills and value added wood product businesses, but he has over $1billion dollars in construction value mass timber experience across Canada. Patrick's technical knowledge of wood properties and forestry, coupled with his design and pre-construction expertise of various mass timber projects, will help you understand project delivery models and how they impact mass timber specification. Prior to joining Bird, Patrick was a regional director for Canadian Wood Council's industry lead woodworks program where he led committees that were instrumental in recent national building code advancements. In addition to these specific initiatives, Patrick travelled the country presenting at design and conferences on the environmental, economic and performance benefits of wood construction. Patrick will provide valuable input on best practice detailing for the design team as well as best practice ‘on site' timber management. Patrick knows the Canadian mass timber market better than anyone and has strong relationships with all key manufacturers, installers, and designers. He will be able to leverage these relationships to ensure best value and service from the global mass timber supply chain.

Moderator: Sonya Zeitler Fletcher, Vice President of Market Development at Forestry Innovation Investment Ltd. Working closely with forest-sector companies, trade associations, research institutes, government agencies, design and construction interests, Sonya leads domestic and international marketing and communications strategies that encourage wood as a primary choice for construction and daily living, while expanding North American and overseas market recognition of B.C.'s and Canada's world-class forest practices and products.
