Por que escribimos? (Why do we write?)Speaker: Dr. Heider Tun Tun, Assistant professor of History, Regis University, Denver, Colorado. Location: Giddens Learning Center (GLC) 6S, Hamline University (in-person only)Date: May 25, 2024, 9 am to noonWorkshop: Inspired by the Salvadoran poet Roque Dalton, this workshop asks the question: Por que escribimos? (Why do we write?) Together, we will discuss the importance of writing and reflecting on personal narratives and stories. In this workshop, participants will explore examples of personal accounts from Central America, including those of Mayan glyphs, women's voices, Indigenous communities and more. By the end of the workshop, participants will write the first page of their own memoirs, drawing connections between their own stories and those of their communities. Feel free to bring a journal; otherwise, writing supplies will be provided. Bio: Heider Tun Tun (Firm Rock, Yucatec Maya), Ph.D., is an assistant professor of History in the Department of History, Politics, and Political Economy at Regis University in Denver, Colorado.The Maya Society was founded in fall 1978 by Twin Cities cultural and educational institutions, along with individuals who shared a passion for the Maya. For forty-five years, we have sponsored lectures and workshops on the Maya and other Mesoamerican cultures, both past and present.
