Sunday, August 25th from 10 am to 4 pm, the Glengarry Pioneer Museum will be hosting a sweet event for the entire family.

The Glengarry Honey Fair is back for its second edition!

Join us in celebrating the importance of some of our favourite pollinators and the people that tend to them: honeybees and beekeepers!

From pioneer times to today, bees have played a crucial role in agriculture by pollinating crops that are essential to human nutrition and the agricultural economy. Honeybees (Apis mellifera L) pollinate a wide variety of crops, including fruits, vegetables, and nuts.

Speakers and experts present throughout the day will teach us all about these sweet little pollinators: how to identify honeybees, the basics of beekeeping and, of course, honey.

Beekeepers from the area will be showcasing their products and competing for first place in our honey competition.

You'll find fresh local flowers and vegetables on site to bring home, all thanks to the tireless efforts of bees.

Crafts people inspired by our little insect friends will be displaying their wares.

Children will enjoy having a bee painted on their cheeks while they attempt to complete the scavenger hunt.

Take a tour of the museum's bee-friendly heritage garden. It's a great way to learn, firsthand, which plants are best at attracting these super pollinators.

Food services will be available on the museum grounds.

Admission is $12 per person ($6 for museum members) and $30 for families ($15 for member families).

People are encouraged to come and make a day of it.

How do we define hobbyist from commercial beekeeper?

A hobbyist is defined by the committee as having a dozen or less hives, has hives on their own property, dedicates only a few hours sporadically to bee management throughout the week/month, does not have contracts to supply retail, does not have steady supply of honey year-round, does not have a business license, etc.

A commercial beekeeper is defined by the committee as having a dozen or more hives, dedicated a part of the week to the care of bees, has bees in multiple locations, has contracts of fulfilment, has steady year-round supply, has a business license, depends on income related to beekeeping, etc.
