The primary goal of this pilot project was to prove the feasibility of a Cyclic Gas Injection/Production (Huff & Puff) enhanced oil recovery (EOR) scheme and evaluate its economic viability in the Viking formation in Saskatchewan, Canada. The Huff & Puff pilot consists of four 1100m hydraulic-fractured horizontal wells with two different inter-well spacings (200 m vs 400 m). Whitecap has been operating this pilot project since its initiation in September 2021 with technical success. Six Huff & Puff cycles with varying durations, between one to three months on injection, have been completed without major operating issues. Detailed pilot performance results and analysis will be presented.

Jin Xie is a staff reservoir engineer at Whitecap Resources Inc. currently. He has 25+ year reservoir & exploitation engineering experience in various oil & gas fields including unconventional tight oil, conventional & heavy oil water flooding, chemical flooding, oil sands, shallow/sour/condensate gas reservoirs. He has worked with Exxonmobil, Nexen, Shell and Cenovus. Jin holds a M.Sc. degree in petroleum engineering from the University of Calgary. He is a registered P.Eng. of APEGA, APEGS and a member of SPE.
