Printing is America’s third largest manufacturing industry — employing nearly 1 million people and selling over $140 billion of products in 2011. The industry is dominated by small- and medium-sized businesses, most employing fewer than 25 employees.

Printing Industries of America (PIA), and its regional affiliates like PINE, is the premier source for information about the state of the printing industry, providing printers of all types, suppliers, consultants, and others with in-depth information. One way of doing so is through the annual Print Market Atlas. The numbers, compiled through a statistical formula created by PIA’s Economics Department using four key data sources, represents the most comprehensive estimates about the size of the nation’s printing industry.
